AIM: using tech to help those with disabilities navigate daily life with sensory feedback like haptic touch

IDEA:
- using OpenAI's Whisper to translate noises and emotions into haptic feedback
- currently, those with hearing disabilities may decipher verbal communication through mouth and lip movements
- what if there was a tool that allowed people with hearing disabilities to FEEL the sounds around them like verbal communication, background and street noises? (e.g. when someone is shouting around you, it gets translated into haptics)
- what if emotions could be sensations by detecting pace and intonation of words and translating it into haptics?
- redirecting sensory feedback in this form can allow those with disabilities to interact and understand the world in new, profound ways

Hi! I am from Belgium with Indian origins and am currently in the United States pursuing a degree in design and technology. I am deeply interested in the application of AI in different fields and in helping communities facing certain issues. I have experience in AI and ML tools, and have been actively exploring the fields of sustainability, ethics, health and disability. I am very open to new ideas-- this is just an idea that I had, but would love to hear your ideas and thoughts too!

People with hearing disabilities do not have the same autonomy as others. They are not able to interact to the extent of those around them, and have limited freedom. WordSense is a hardware product that assists people with hearing disabilities in navigating daily life with tactile sensory feedback, more specifically, Haptic Touch. As a person with hearing disabilities, WordSense solves the problems of not being able to passively interpret conversations around you, having to face the person to read lip movement or sign language, not being able to multitask, and having tunnel vision due to the lack of sound as an indicator. WordSense eases the daily lives of people facing hearing disabilities, and provides them with the power of autonomy.

GPT-3 stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 and it is an autoregressive language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text. It is the third-generation language prediction model in the GPT-n series created by OpenAI. GPT-3 is currently in open beta.

OpenAI Codex is an artificial intelligence platform that enables developers to translate natural language into code.

Whisper is a general-purpose speech recognition model. It is trained on a large dataset of diverse audio and is also a multi-task model that can perform multilingual speech recognition as well as speech translation and language identification.
