The speech I am about to deliver is not to bid you farewell, for you may depart as you wish, but to recount your transformation since joining us. Let us begin with my father, Philip. He found you vagabonds, clad in hides, fighting off Illyrians, Triballians, and Thracians for your sheep. He clothed you in cloaks, led you to the plains, taught you to fight, and made you rulers over your former foes. He extended Macedonia into Thrace, secured the coast, and enriched us through commerce and mining. Under Philip, you feared the Thessalians and faced threats from Athenians and Thebans. Yet, he subdued them, making Macedonia a powerhouse. He led Greece against Persia, uniting us in glory. These were Philip's giftsβsignificant, yet pale beside what I've achieved. I inherited little but debts, yet opened the Hellespont, seized Ionia, Aeolis, Phrygia, Lydia, and more. Egypt, Cyrene, Coele-Syria, Babylon, Bactra, Susa, all ours. The wealth of Lydia, Persia, Indiaβall yours. You are viceroys, generals, captains. My gain? This robe, this diadem. No treasures are mine, only yours, guarded for your sake. I live as you do, sleep as you do. My fare is meager; I watch while you rest.
